The Doohickey’s debut album “All Hat No Cattle” was released on January 24th. Saving Country Music called it one of the most anticipated albums of 2025 and added: “If you’re going to make a country album, you might as well make it right. That’s what The Doohickeys did.”

“Unpretentious and full of cutting, satirical lyrics, All Hat No Cattle is a humdinger of an album, pure country at it’s best” — Ink19

All 12 tracks were written by Haley Spence Brown and Jack Hackett.

Produced by 2x Grammy nominee Eric Corne, the record features a handful of talented folks: Eugene Edwards (Dwight Yoakam), Hayley Orrantia (The Goldbergs), Jim Jefferies (Legit), Skip Edwards (Desert Rose Band), Aubrey Richmond (Shooter Jennings), Adam Arcos (Sam Morrow), and Matt Tecu (Brian Wilson).

The second track “Can’t Beat My Ol’ Beater” hit #1 on SiriusXM Outlaw Country. The album charted at #21 on the Americana Radio charts with the lead single “Rein It In Cowboy” charting at #28.

The music video for “Rein It In Cowboy” (dir. Jack Hackett & Chris Beyrooty) won the American Songwriter Lights, Camera, Talent Promotion Music Video Contest.

The tall tale

The Doohickeys consists of singing and writing duo Haley Spence Brown & Jack Hackett. Haley hails from Liberty, Missouri, where she spent her childhood training horses and helping on her grandpa's cattle farm. Jack grew up in a strict Japanese-American household in Atlanta, Georgia where you had to take your shoes off at the door (everything else was pretty lax).

These country wordsmiths bring a humorous twist to their unique brand of country music, an assorted mix of old and new, with intentional stupidity and clever jokes woven into the lyrics. Although they might seem to be twisted country punsters on the surface, they're that and so much more.

Although they have country roots, Jack and Haley met at USC (FIGHT ON!) while working on the college TV station's satirical news show. They both were pursuing careers in comedy and made many sketches together. On one fateful evening in November 2021, Jack was hosting his legendary weekend-after-Halloween party when Haley heard Kenny Chesney echoing through the spookily decorated halls. Right then, they discovered their mutual love of country music.

The Doohickeys have gained significant recognition for their work. Since launching their promotional content in June 2024, they have quickly amassed over 15 million views and 64.2k followers on Instagram, along with more than 8 million views and 37.4k followers on TikTok, solidifying their presence across social media platforms. Their music video “Rein It In Cowboy” won the American Songwriter Magazine Road Ready video competition, and the song lyrics for “All Hat No Cattle” received an honorable mention in the May/June edition of the magazine. Additionally, their song “This Town Sucks” earned an award for Outstanding Songwriting in the 2023 Great American Song Contest.

The band has performed at notable venues such as the famous Bluebird Cafe, Desert 5 Spot, The Hotel Cafe, and even the prestigious Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN (supporting comedian Jim Jefferies). You can usually find them prowling around the LA music scene, delivering their unique spin on country music to anyone looking for a fun time.
